Should You Take
Supplements?
While there is an
ongoing debate over the optimal use of nutritional supplements and
their effectiveness, the vast majority of health experts agree that
most Americans should take ‘basic vitamin supplements’.
There is also agreement that supplements cannot take
the place of a healthy diet. The problem being that proper nutrition
is a huge health challenge for Americans, with over 75 million
(that’s one in every four Americans - including children) not
getting the recommended daily allowance of nutrition in their diets.
Additionally, less than one fourth of us eat the recommended five
servings of fruits and vegetables per day (forget about the 5-9
servings that are suggested for optimal health!).
We all wish and most of us even try to eat the ‘pyramid
perfect’ diets, but in reality it just is not happening. That’s
where nutritional supplements play a very critical role. A good
daily multiple (such as OneLifeUSA’s Daily Multiple with digestive
plant enzymes) can work as insurance and fill in the nutritional
gaps in our diets. Adding a good supply of anti-oxidants (OneLifeUSA’s
Advanced Anti-Oxidant in a base of Echinacea and Garlic or our
Proanthocyanidins) will help you meet your nutritional needs on a
daily basis, thereby helping to improve your overall health.
The noted benefits of omega-3 fatty acids have been
making news for years, unfortunately the majority of us don’t come
close to consuming enough fish and nuts to get the daily recommended
amounts. That’s when it’s often more convenient and less expensive
to achieve the desired amounts using supplements. It is important to
stick with a high quality 100% salmon oil product (as is found in
OneLifeUSA’s Something Smells Fishy).
Most Americans are also lacking in one other very key
nutrient: Calcium. The important thing to remember about calcium is
that without vitamin D it’s worthless. When selecting a calcium
supplement remember to check the label and be sure it contains
adequate amounts of vitamin D and magnesium (see OneLifeUSA’s Coral
Calcium and Calcium Plus formulas). Properly formulated, your body
can absorb and use the calcium supplied through supplements. Other
herbals and dietary components are included in most recommend basic
nutritional plans. Co-Q 10 (Coenzyme Q 10) being the most well
noted. (OneLifeUSA’s Co-Q 10 is the highest quality available)
All of the supplements mentioned have been studied
soundly with results published in well-respected medical journals.
Perhaps not everyone agrees on the specifics of their use, however,
they do agree that nutritional supplements play a key role in
helping the overall nutritional needs of the majority of Americans.
By providing natural therapeutic agents (that are difficult to get
from diet alone), supplements have shown to help prevent and treat
age-related diseases.
Speak with your health care provider. Together, draw up
a nutritional plan that incorporates a healthy diet (one that is
reasonable and you can stick to). Then add in nutritional
supplements, where needed, to insure that your basic nutritional
needs are met every day. |
