Boost Your
Metabolism
I
There are many
things you can do to boost your metabolism, or as often referred to
as ways to trick your body into burning calories more efficiently.
Your basal metabolic rate, or the energy your body burns at rest, is
generally determined by genetics. However, research has shown you
can increase your metabolic rate, thereby helping you achieve your
ideal weight, as well as a stronger and healthier body.
1. Start your day smart and keep it
on track. This means eat breakfast and snack right. Start
your day with proper breakfast – sorry no bacon, egg and cheese
sandwich- try instead a slice of whole-wheat toast with peanut
butter and a piece of fruit, or low-fat yogurt with a small handful
of whole grain granola. It is important to snack – just not on
donuts and candy bars – instead opt for a healthy
protein/carbohydrate combination, to keep away the overhungry-overeating
reaction.
2. Exercise. And
you don’t have to go at it like your training for the Olympics.
Importantly is to select the proper type of exercise and do it
consistently. Most effective is exercise that alternates short
bursts of more intense activity followed by periods of less intense
activity. For example, short sprints alternated with slow jogging or
walking. Or perhaps powering up a hill followed by an easy downhill
lope. It is also important to realize that as we get older, we lose
muscle, gain fat, and our metabolism slows down as a result. This is
where strength or weight training comes into play. This reduces fat
and replaces it with muscle…muscle burns more calories than fat.
3. Stop slashing calories –
depriving your body of fuel is a sure way to slow it down. The key
is giving your body a constant supply of healthy fuel.
4. B vitamins and magnesium are key
to boosting your metabolism. B vitamins are key players in energy
synthesis. Inadequate amounts of B vitamins can leave you feeling
depressed and fatigued, slow the body’s metabolism, and increase
your risk for chronic diseases. For a boost of B
vitamins, try OneLifeUSA’s Stress Free Energy formula or Brabec
Basics Balanced-B’s formula. Good food alternatives for B vitamins
are spinach, asparagus, beans and melons. Additionally, the National
Institutes of Health has reported that most Americans are not
getting enough magnesium in their diets for optimal health. Boost
your intake of magnesium and in turn boost your metabolism with
OneLifeUSA’s Calcium Plus or Coral Calcium formulas. Good food
sources for magnesium are almonds, halibut, and soybeans. |
