Taking Statin Drugs? LipitorŽ, CrestorŽ,
or ZocorŽ
Statin
drugs have become very popular and are being widely prescribed to
lower high blood cholesterol. There is one unfortunate consequence
of taking statin drugs: the unintentional blockage of the synthesis
of Co Q10 in the body. If you’re taking statin drugs (such as
Lipitor, Crestor, or Zocor) to lower cholesterol, you should also
consider taking the supplement coenzyme Q-10, (Co Q-10). This
anti-oxidant is essential to energy production within the heart and
the rest of the body.
People taking these statin drugs should take 100 mg of Co Q-10 each
day. Because this coenzyme improves blood flow and helps prevent the
oxidation of LDL cholesterol, it’s important for overall heart
protection (50 to 100 mg is wise for anyone with high cholesterol).
If you’re taking a blood thinner such as Coumadin, talk with your
healthcare provider before starting Co Q-10. Also note that all Co
Q-10’s are manufactured synthetically, therefore there is a large
range in quality of this product. Look for pharmaceutical grade and
better yet from Japan – and always buy your supplements from a
trusted company.*
